Insurance Coverage for Survivors of Head and Neck Cancer

Insurance Coverage for Patients with Head and Neck Cancer

Patients treated for Head and Neck cancer often end up having aggressive surgery, which results in the loss of teeth and supporting structures. Additionally, treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy also has an impact on the patient’s oral health. Patients with cancers elsewhere in the body do not have the financial burden of paying for any follow up treatment, which may arise as a consequence of their cancer therapy. However patients who have been treated for Head and Neck cancer usually need extensive dental treatment (and not for cosmetic reasons) as part of long term follow up care to avoid serious health problems, such as Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (dead jaw).  There is clearly a financial inequality for patients with Head and Neck cancer to pay for the postoperative and reconstructive phase following their cancer treatment.

The purpose of this petition is to raise awareness on behalf of all surivors of Head and Necck Cancer in hopes that they will be fairly treated by the insurance industry.
